What happens when the world in front of our eyes no longer adds up to a coherent whole? When we are not able to make sense of the world around us, and our place within it? This feeling is captured in a meme that has been circulating for several months under the term "monitor the situation." It usually depicts men staring at countless screens, displaying various images of world events, similar to a command center. Except here no command is given, because the individual pieces of information allow no conclusion — you zoom out, but there is no globe, only data points that bear seemingly no relationship to one another. The meme captures a very present feeling: the world is sinking into chaos, but I choose to monitor the situation. This exhibition examines how we attempt to order the world through cognitive and technical methods, but also how political systems inscribe themselves into this order. In doing so, we trace both the failure of our coordinate systems and ask about possibilities for a different kind of perception — one that might develop precisely out of a critical engagement with prevailing models.
